Shifting Language Patterns for Hispanics

09.05.2006

A new Census Bureau survey found that young Hispanics are more fluent in English and less likely to speak Spanish at home. When at home, 24% of Hispanics ages 5-17 speak English (alone or in addition to Spanish) and 90% of these kids can speak fluently. Conversely, only 11% of those 18-64 years and 6% of those 65 and older are able to speak English. As immigrants begin raising their children within the United States, their kids are exposed to not only their own native language, but that of their new country.
